ben and jerrys ice cream factory tour in waterbury vermont

Vermont always got lumped with New Hampshire in my head growing up, but they are genuinely different states once you spend time in both. New Hampshire is raw outdoor adventure. Vermont is that plus a food and craft culture that sneaks up on you. Between the skiing at Killington and Stowe, the maple farm touring, the farm-to-table dining scene, and Lake Champlain's monster legends, Vermont delivers a guys trip with more texture than most New England states get credit for.

Where to Go in Vermont

Vermont's guys trip geography runs along a north-south spine through the Green Mountains, with Burlington anchoring the northwest on Lake Champlain and the Northeast Kingdom offering wilderness in the upper right.

Burlington

Vermont's largest city sits on Lake Champlain with the Adirondacks visible across the water. Church Street Marketplace is walkable and lined with restaurants, and the waterfront brewery district - Foam Brewers, Zero Gravity, Switchback - makes it the state's best bachelor party base. ECHO Leahy Center has a Champ sculpture and a full exhibit on Vermont's lake monster legend, dating back to Abenaki and Iroquois stories of a horned serpent. Sailing charters and paddleboarding fill the daytime hours.

Stowe

Stowe sits at the base of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak at 4,393 feet. Winter is the headliner but summer brings mountain biking and the Stowe Recreation Path. The Alchemist brewery draws craft beer pilgrims, and von Trapp Brewing (yes, those von Trapps) serves Austrian-style lagers on a hillside with mountain views.

Killington

Killington earns its "Beast of the East" nickname with 1,509 skiable acres across six peaks and a 3,050-foot vertical drop - the largest ski area in the eastern United States. As you'd expect from a resort like this, bars and restaurants keep apres-ski going well past dark. Summer transforms the mountain into an adventure park with the Beast Mountain Coaster and lift-served mountain biking.

The Northeast Kingdom

The upper-right corner feels like a different state. Kingdom Trails in East Burke has over 85 miles of mountain biking singletrack, consistently ranked among the best trail networks in North America. A father-son biking trip here works at any skill level. Hill Farmstead Brewery in nearby Greensboro is regularly rated among the best breweries in the world.

What Vermont Does Best

Vermont punches in four categories that set it apart from the rest of New England - skiing, craft beverages, farm culture, and mountain biking.

Skiing and Winter Sports

Twenty alpine ski resorts packed into a state smaller than New Hampshire. Mad River Glen - home to America's last remaining single chairlift - offers the most challenging natural terrain in the East. Jay Peak near the Canadian border catches more snow than anywhere else in the state and has an indoor waterpark for recovery days.

Craft Beer and Spirits

Vermont has roughly 77 craft breweries, one of the highest concentrations per capita in the country. The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, and Foam Brewers are the headliners, but the depth runs statewide. Burlington alone can fill a full brewery crawl weekend.

Maple and Dairy Farm Culture

Vermont produces more maple syrup than any other state. Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks near Montpelier offers free self-guided tours year-round, with the full sugaring process visible during the season that runs from Valentine's Day through Tax Day. The farm-to-table dining scene connects directly to this agricultural identity.

Mountain Biking

Kingdom Trails gets the headlines, but Vermont has networks across the state. Killington offers lift-served downhill in summer. The trails run through working farms and forests, and the pastoral landscape makes the riding feel different from anything out west.

When to Go

January through March delivers the best skiing with Killington and Stowe at full capacity. Summer from June through August opens mountain biking, lake activities, and brewery touring. Late September through mid-October is fall foliage season - Stowe and Woodstock become postcard-level scenic but lodging books fast. Ben and Jerry's factory tours in Waterbury run year-round but sell out in summer, so book two weeks ahead. Avoid mid-March through mid-May - mud season shuts down most trails and outdoor activities.

More Vermont Guys Trip Ideas

Beyond the headliners, Vermont has enough depth to fill return trips across every season.

  • Ben and Jerry's Factory Tour in Waterbury - 30-minute guided tours, chunk tastings, and the Flavor Graveyard where discontinued flavors rest under genuine headstones.
  • Lake Champlain fishing charters - lake trout, landlocked salmon, and northern pike on a 120-mile lake stretching along the Vermont-New York border.
  • Smugglers' Notch zip lining - ArborTrek's canopy tour through the forest at heights up to 75 feet.
  • Jay Peak Pump House - massive indoor waterpark with La Chute, a 65-foot drop waterslide. Good recovery day after skiing.
  • Fly fishing the Battenkill River - one of America's most storied trout streams in southern Vermont.
  • Long Trail hiking - America's oldest long-distance trail runs 272 miles along the Green Mountain ridge.
  • Goodrich Maple Farm in Cabot - family operation since 1840 tapping over 44,000 trees with free tours and tastings.
  • Cannabis tourism - Vermont's legal recreational market includes dispensaries in Burlington and cannabis-friendly accommodations in Stowe.

Other States Worth Exploring

Vermont connects naturally to the broader New England and upstate New York corridor.

  • New Hampshire - if Vermont's ski terrain grabbed your crew, New Hampshire delivers bigger mountains and the Mount Washington cog railway with a more rugged, less polished edge.
  • Massachusetts - the craft beer energy extends south into Boston's sports bars and Cape Cod's beach break scene, plus western Mass adds skiing and the Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • New York State - Lake Champlain is half New York's, and crossing over opens the Adirondacks, Finger Lakes wine country, and upstate cities that pair naturally with a Vermont trip.

Looking for Even More Getaway Ideas In The Green Mountain State?

These are the official tourism sites for some of our favorite Vermont destinations:

Vermont is the New England state that rewards guys who look past the postcard scenery and dig into the food, the beer, and the trails underneath. Start with Stowe or Burlington depending on whether your crew leans ski-and-drink or eat-and-explore, and save the Northeast Kingdom for the return trip when you want something wilder. Book Alchemist and Ben and Jerry's visits early - those are the two things that actually sell out.
