Maryland Guys Trip Ideas

maryland blue crab

Maryland packs three completely different states into one. The Eastern Shore is all crabbing, waterfowl hunting, and slow-paced waterfront towns. Baltimore and the DC suburbs bring urban grit and culture - Baltimore especially has its own identity that has nothing to do with the capital. Then you cross the ridge into Western Maryland and it goes full Appalachian wilderness with bike trails and mountain lakes. Most guys pick one of those three and build a whole weekend around it, which is the right move.

Where to Go in Maryland

Maryland splits into three zones that feel like different states - the urban Baltimore-DC corridor, the laid-back Eastern Shore across the Chesapeake Bay, and the wild mountain country out west.

Baltimore

Baltimore is the anchor for most Maryland guys trips. Camden Yards is still one of the best ballparks in America, Fells Point and Federal Hill have the bar density for a bachelor party weekend, and the Inner Harbor connects it all. The craft beer scene - Heavy Seas, Union Craft Brewing, Diamondback - runs deep. Horseshoe Casino sits right next to the stadiums on Russell Street.

The Eastern Shore

Cross the Bay Bridge and the pace drops immediately. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge near Cambridge is one of the best spots on the East Coast for duck and goose hunting. Waterfront towns like St. Michaels, Easton, and Rock Hall serve cream of crab soup and fresh oysters that justify the drive. A father-son waterfowl hunting weekend on the Eastern Shore - guided morning hunts, crab feast in the afternoon - is one of those trips that creates family traditions.

Western Maryland

Past Frederick, Maryland turns into Appalachian mountain country. Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County is the hub - 3,900 acres of freshwater with lakefront cabin rentals and Wisp Resort for skiing. The Allegany County corridor is where the Great Allegheny Passage starts its 150-mile run from Cumberland to Pittsburgh.

What Maryland Does Best

Maryland punches hardest in four categories - seafood, water access, gaming, and history.

Chesapeake Bay Seafood

Maryland blue crabs - steamed with Old Bay at a crab house with brown paper on the table and mallets in hand. Cantler's Riverside Inn in Annapolis and Harris Crab House on Kent Island are the iconic spots. Pair it with a local craft beer and this is one of those meals your crew will reference for years.

Casino Gaming

MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill sits on the Potomac near DC with a 125,000-square-foot floor and celebrity chef restaurants. Horseshoe Baltimore is right in the stadium district downtown. Live! Casino in Hanover splits the difference between Baltimore and DC near BWI. Each one is a different vibe.

Fishing and Hunting

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the country and the striped bass fishing - rockfish, in Maryland terms - is legendary. Charter out of Annapolis, Rock Hall, or Tilghman Island for spring trophy season. On the hunting side, the Eastern Shore's waterfowl reputation is earned. Western Maryland adds whitetail deer hunting and trout fishing on the Savage River.

History and Military Heritage

The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis is worth the tour even if nobody in your crew served. Antietam battlefield near Sharpsburg is the bloodiest single day in American history. Fort McHenry in Baltimore is where the national anthem was written.

When to Go

April through June is the sweet spot - mild weather, the start of crab season, and spring striped bass runs. Summer brings peak beach season at Ocean City but brutal humidity in Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. September and October deliver fall color in Western Maryland and the start of waterfowl hunting season. Winter is for skiers at Wisp Resort and Deep Creek Lake cabin weekends with fewer crowds.

More Maryland Guys Trip Ideas

Beyond the headliners, Maryland has enough depth to fill multiple weekends.

  • Annapolis Sailing - charter a sailboat on the Chesapeake or take a multi-day sailing course in America's Sailing Capital.
  • Sagamore Spirit Distillery - rye whiskey distillery in Baltimore's Port Covington with tours and tastings.
  • Ocean City Boardwalk - three miles of classic East Coast beach resort with Thrasher's fries and Fisher's popcorn.
  • Great Allegheny Passage - 150-mile rail trail from Cumberland to Pittsburgh with mountain scenery and brewpub stops.
  • Potomac River Kayaking - flat water near Poolesville or whitewater below Great Falls.
  • Maryland International Raceway - drag racing in Budds Creek for engine noise and quarter-mile competition.
  • Orioles at Camden Yards - one of the ballparks that changed stadium design in America.
  • Fly Fishing the Savage River - Western Maryland's catch-and-release trout stream with mountain scenery.

Other States Worth Exploring

Maryland sits at a crossroads where the Mid-Atlantic meets the South.

  • Virginia - if the Chesapeake Bay fishing and military history grabbed your crew, Virginia extends both with the Norfolk naval base, Shenandoah hiking, and Richmond's craft beer scene.
  • Pennsylvania - the Great Allegheny Passage literally connects Cumberland to Pittsburgh, and central PA's hunting and fishing country delivers more of Western Maryland's vibe.
  • West Virginia - Western Maryland's Appalachian terrain is the appetizer. Cross the border for Class IV-V whitewater on the New and Gauley Rivers.
  • Delaware - the Eastern Shore vibe continues south with Rehoboth Beach, Dover's NASCAR weekends, and Dogfish Head brewery.

Maryland is one of those states where the guys trip you plan depends entirely on which version of the state you show up to.
