# How To Test, Fit, And Buy Your First Home Defense Gun *By James Hills, mantripping.com — Updated July 2026* Deciding you want a gun in the house for home defense is the easy part. Then you stand in front of a display case with two hundred handguns in it, Glocks and Sigs and Smith and Wessons and a used rack you have not even looked at yet, and there is no obvious way to tell which one belongs on your nightstand. Most first-time buyers settle it by taking whatever the guy behind the counter is pushing that week, and that is how people end up owning a gun they never shoot. ** Questions** ** No answer selected. Almost nobody does. Ammunition is stocked deep again after several lean years, with plenty of retailers listing common defensive calibers in stock and ready to [buy now](https://www.ableammo.com/). Supply and access are the easy parts now. What trips people up is doing things in the wrong order, starting with the biggest one: walking into a shop before you have settled what kind of gun you want. ## Decide Between A Handgun, Shotgun, Or Rifle Before You Shop Walk in with the category already settled. Whether a handgun, a shotgun, or a pistol caliber carbine is right for you depends on your home layout, your household, and what you can realistically train with, and a gun counter with a salesman waiting on you is a terrible place to work that out from scratch. I broke the whole comparison down in [picking a home defense weapon without getting talked into the wrong one](index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=530&catid=16&id=3220&view=article), and I covered the same ground for new homeowners over on MenWhoBlog in [buying a home defense firearm](https://menwhoblog.com/blog/how-to-select-the-right-gun-for-home-defense.html). If you have landed on a handgun and you are still stuck on caliber, that argument has eaten more forum threads than it deserves. Modern defensive loads have narrowed the gap, and the [9mm versus .45 ACP comparison](index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=530&catid=16&id=3421&view=article) covers where each one still makes sense. ## Rent The Gun Before You Buy It By Testing It At A Shooting Range Gun shops with an attached gun range will often rent out the same models sitting in their display case. Handgun rentals typically run $10 to $20 each, some ranges offer a flat fee that lets you swap through as many as you want in one session, and a number of them will credit the rental fee back against the purchase if you buy that same gun that day. Four platforms, an hour of range time, and a box of ammunition puts you somewhere around $75 to $100. A handgun you bought on a hunch and never shoot is $500 sitting in a drawer. My father-in-law Jim is the best gun expert I know, and before he got sick, he spent his weekends working gun shows across Ohio, manning a table and talking to buyers at every experience level. His recommendation for anyone who has not fired the thing they are about to buy: "Go to a gun store that has a shooting range with an NRA instructor." An instructor watching you shoot four different guns will tell you things about your grip and your flinch that you cannot see from behind the sights. Most ranges require that you shoot their ammunition in their rental guns, which is a liability and warranty rule, so factor a couple of boxes at range prices into the day. ## Hand Fit Matters More Than The Spec Sheet Take a firm two-handed grip and check where the pad of your trigger finger lands. If you have to rotate the gun in your hand or break your grip to reach the trigger, that gun is wrong for you, and no amount of practice fully compensates for it. Then rack the slide. Rack it again after fifty rounds, when your hands are tired and a little sore, because the aggressive grip texture that felt great in the store is often chewing up your palm by round eighty. Most modern striker-fired pistols ship with swappable backstrap panels, and the counter staff will fit them to your hand if you ask. The bigger version of this test is who else in the house might need to use it. I have watched more than one guy at the range insist on a full-size pistol for the house while his wife could not reliably rack the slide on it. If only one adult can run the gun, it is only protecting you on the nights that adult is home. ## The Background Check And Your State's Waiting Period Federal law is the same everywhere: buy from a licensed dealer, fill out ATF Form 4473, and pass a background check before you leave with the gun. For most people in most states that is a phone call and a few minutes at the counter. The state you live in decides how long you wait, and this is the step people most often get blindsided by. California imposes a 10-day waiting period on any firearm. Maryland holds a handgun for seven days but lets a shotgun walk out the door. Illinois runs 72 hours on everything. Texas and Ohio have no state waiting period at all. Several states layer on a permit or license you have to obtain before you are even allowed to start, which pushes the timeline into weeks. Check your own state's rules before you plan the purchase. ## New Versus Used At The Counter The used case holds the best value in the store, and it gets skipped because a scuffed slide reads as a compromise when it usually just means the gun was carried. Police trade-ins and traded-up service pistols spend years in a holster and an afternoon at the range, so the finish wear is cosmetic while the internals have barely been touched. You are often looking at a couple hundred dollars off a Glock 17 or a Smith and Wesson M&P that will outlive you. What to look at: work the action and feel for grit or hesitation, check that the slide locks back on an empty magazine, and inspect the muzzle crown and the feed ramp for damage. Holster wear on the outside tells you almost nothing. Buy from a dealer who will stand behind it. New buys you the warranty and a known history. If this is your first gun and you would not know a worn recoil spring from a healthy one, that is a legitimate reason to pay for it. ## Make Sure To Budget The Cost Of Ammunition, Not Just The Gun The gun is the smaller line item over any reasonable time horizon. A 50-round box of 9mm range ammunition runs about $15 to $20 at most counters, and quality defensive hollow-points run $1 to $2 per round. Plan on 500 rounds of practice in the first year at minimum, which puts your ammunition bill in the same neighborhood as a third of the gun. Jim has a warning about the other half of that spend, which is that the load you pick matters as much as the caliber stamped on the barrel: "Depends on what kind of ammo you buy because some of it's a lot faster than others." A premium hollow-point and a bargain box of range ammo behave like two different guns in your hand. Budget for a quick-access safe on day one. Keypad and biometric nightstand models from Vaultek and Hornady run $150 to $300 and mount to a bed frame or inside a cabinet. A loaded gun in an unsecured drawer is a liability, particularly once anyone visits with kids in tow. ## Practice And Be Ready To Shoot In An Emergency Situation One more range trip before that gun goes in the safe: run at least 100 rounds of the exact defensive load you intend to keep in it through the gun. Practice makes you a safer gun owner and it also allows you to be ready to defend your home in an emergency. Hollow-points feed differently than the cheap flat-nose range ammunition you practiced with. A pistol that ate a thousand rounds of FMJ without a hiccup can still choke on the premium defensive round you loaded it with, and 3 a.m. is a bad time to learn that about your own gun. Five 20-round boxes will cost you $100 to $200 and tell you whether the $650 you put into the gun and the safe bought you anything.
