- Richmond Is A Great Destination For A Guys Trip!
At first glance, this might surprise you - located in central Virginia, it lacks those iconic destination-type things --- there are no big resorts, no beautiful beaches, and not even any major league professional sports teams to plan an away game trip to visit. However, what it does have is an amazing collection of restaurants, bars, historic sites, music venues, and a heritage of hospitality that while evolved from it's days as the Capital of the Confederacy ... still exudes a strong sense of southern charm.
Today's Richmond has evolved tremendously from even just 20 years ago when Heather and I explored it as a potential town to relocate to. At that time it was clear that this post-industrial city had the potential to be a great place to live. We just weren't in a position to be urban pioneers and take a risk. I wish we had ... but at least now I can visit as a tourist and encourage the rest of you guys to do so as well!
While Sujeet from GuysGab and I explored the city on a guys trip, I CAN'T WAIT till Heather and I can explore it from a new perspective as part of a /romantic-getaway sometime soon.
With its blend of history, outdoor adventure, bustling craft beer scene and historical landmarks, Richmond offers a unique experience that caters to diverse interests. Notably, it is truly a diverse city ... one that received national attention a few years ago due to the destruction and removal of many war memorials related to its antebellum and Civil War history. However, after exploring the city, talking with residents, and exploring it's culinary scene - it's obvious that diversity here is more than just "black and white". In fact, in many ways the environment here felt very welcoming to folks from all walks of life and a gay couple who joined our guys trip seemed to feel the same way.
So, whether you're looking to sample local brews, explore Civil War historic sites, or get your adrenaline pumping while braving the James River rapids, this Southern gem has something for everyone!
Vibrant Bar Scene
Richmond's pulsating bar scene is a beer lover's paradise, boasting over 30 craft breweries and a diverse array of nightlife options that'll keep your group engaged for days. I found it especially exciting in that while you can certainly find cutting-edge cocktail bars and craft breweries ... there were also some great dive bars such as the one pictured above, Gwar Bar, that is actually run by one of the band members. Anyone who's a fan of Gwar should ABSOLUTELY plan a visit here ... it's quite the experience.
Museums, Historic Landmarks and Parks
History buffs and outdoor enthusiasts in your group will find plenty to investigate among Richmond's wealth of historical landmarks and scenic parks. As the former capital of the Confederacy, the city's rich history is evident at every turn.

Diverse Culinary Experiences
After exploring Richmond's historical sites, you'll want to satisfy your appetite with the city's diverse and exciting culinary offerings. You and your friends can indulge in a wide range of cuisines, from artisanal bakeries to authentic Texas BBQ. What I found fascinating here is that while I was expecting to find "southern cooking" as well as upscale modern American cuisine - there's a ton of great Asian food here too. Richmond is a cultural melting pot and so you'll find Korean chicken shops as well as Mekong, a Vietnamese restaurant that also serves as a beer bar including some of their own brews from The Answer such as Coconut Mekong Maman - a Chocolate Coffee Maple Cinnamon Vanilla Imperial Stout with Coconut. That's a lot going on but it just goes to show the diversity of this town extends around the world.
Richmond's status as one of the best food cities in the U.S. means you'll have plenty of options to choose from. Don't miss the chance to visit some of the 30+ craft breweries, where you can sample unique local brews.
The city's commitment to farm-to-table practices guarantees you'll enjoy meals made with fresh, local produce. Weekly rotating flavors at local eateries keep things interesting, encouraging you to try new dishes throughout your stay.
Whether you're looking for fine dining or casual eats, Richmond's diverse culinary experiences will satisfy every palate in your group.
Richmond Raceway
Remember what I said about no major league sports teams? Well that's not entirely true ... Richmond does have the Richmond Raceway and for NASCAR fans THIS, combined with everything else we've talked about makes the city a great reason to pick here over anywhere else.
Richmond Raceway is less than 20 minutes from downtown, and its legacy as a half-mile dirt track, which originally opened in 1946, is obvious. While it has been expanded to .75 miles today, unlike the big modern speedways - Richmond Raceway is a tight track with great visibility and fabulous amenities for a group of guys - for instance a retirement party or bachelor party.
Exciting Outdoor Activities
Bursting with natural beauty and adventure opportunities, Richmond offers an abundance of exciting outdoor activities for you and your buddies to enjoy.
With over 175 parks and 30+ scenic hiking trails, you'll find plenty of options to investigate the great outdoors. The Virginia Capital Trail spans 52 miles along the James River, perfect for hiking or biking adventures.
Richmond is the only major city in America with Class-4 rapids right downtown (technically OKC does but they were built for Olympic training and not naturally occurring). So, if you're looking for a thrill, grab your kayak or hire a guide to take you river rafting on the James River.
For a more relaxed experience, visit Maymont Gardens, featuring themed gardens and wildlife habitats.
A Welcoming Atmosphere for Male Bonding
Beyond its outdoor attractions, Richmond's welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for guys looking to strengthen their bonds and create lasting memories together. Here are some of the photos from our adventure. Here are some photos from our guys getaway ...
Richmond Is A Great Destination For A Guys Trip!
Richmond, Virginia, offers an ideal setting for your next guys' trip. I just can't express that enough. What was once a city that had clearly "seen better days" is now back and continues to grow. Not only does it offer a buffet of awesome activities for a diverse group of men - it's also very easy to get to.
It's only 110 miles from Washignton, DC and 170 miles to Raliegh, North Carolina, making it an excellent road trip destination. Don't worry if you live farther away though - Richmond Airport was surprisingly good and has plenty of direct flights to major cities like Detroit, New York, Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, and more.
