# We Hear That The Stanley Hotel Gets Shining Reviews *By James Hills — Updated July 2023* If you're traveling to the Colorado area, there is one hotel stay that every man must make at least once in his life. Tucked away between large mountains and lush trees sits the elegant Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Within the walls of the Stanley Hotel, you will find a wide range of amenities to make any stay just right. Having first opened in 1909, The Stanley Hotel is an iconic Rocky Mountain lodge located just minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Colorado. As you'd expect from a lodge that has survived for more than 100 years, it has a rich heritage and more than it's share of supernatural stories. From mountain biking to hiking on the more than 350 miles of trails in the park there is no shortage of places to explore. Amazing vistas surround the resort out virtually every window. However, after a long day of exploring the unspoiled beauty of the mountains, there's nothing like unwinding with a fine whiskey or cold Colorado craft beer. Visit the Whiskey Bar inside the Stanley Hotel to treat yourself to nearly 1,000 different expressions and one of the most comprehensive beer selections in Colorado. Also featured are many award-winning wine selections from regional vineyards, newer vineyards, and more. ### Six Things I Learned at the BMW Performance Center A visit to the BMW Performance Center in Thermal ( Palm Springs ), California is a great way to hone driving skills and improve your driving ability. King was inspired to write the novel after he and his wife stayed at The Stanley shortly before it closed for the winter in 1974. The desolation of the hotel and the long corridors lead the author to have a nightmare that would forever change the pop culture landscape. While the Overlook Resort portrayed in the movie is actually the Timberline Lodge on the slopes of Mount Hood in Oregon, it's hard to argue that The Stanley is an amazingly inspirational destination for a guys weekend and they have even added a hedge maze similar to what you remember from the movie! Check out special [Night Ghost Tours](https://www.stanleyhotel.com/tours/night-ghost-tours) packages and for the REALLY brave you can even stay in Room 217 where the author stayed. Outside of the Stanley, the beautiful Rocky Mountains await adventurous travelers. Located just outside the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park, visitors to the Stanley Hotel have a plethora of outdoor activities available to them. Wildlife and nature are in full bloom throughout most of the year. Take an animal viewing tour through the Rocky Mountains or simply take a hike on any of the trails throughout the area. If golf is your game (and who doesn't love a good game), the Estes Park area boasts two popular golf courses to help you shed some of that unneeded stress. The 18-hole Estes Park Golf Course is home to more than 6,400 yards of golf action while the Lake Estes Golf Course gives you a chance to play 9-holes without the need for tee times or reservations. However you plan to enjoy your stay in Colorado, the Stanley Hotel has something is ready to help you enjoy it even more.
