Long distance rail in North America is a different animal from the commuter train most people picture. The California Zephyr takes the better part of two days to get from Chicago to the Bay Area. The Empire Builder runs roughly the same. VIA Rail's Canadian crosses the country over several days. Even the Auto Train down to Florida is an overnight commitment. Nobody boards one of these in a hurry, which is exactly the appeal, right up until hour six when you realize you have a lot of hours left and no plan for any of them.
The phone comes out first, and that is fine, but it is worth knowing what actually holds up over a long stretch versus what burns through your battery and your patience in forty minutes. As Next.io notes, social casino and sweepstakes games run without a purchase to get started and without the stakes of the real thing, which makes them one of the better fits for a train specifically. Sessions are short, you can put one down mid-round when the conductor comes through, and picking it back up costs you nothing. That is a different profile from a game that wants forty-five uninterrupted minutes and a stable connection.
The rest of a long ride rewards the same kind of thinking. A train is not a flight, and treating it like one is why people get bored.
The Window Stops Being Enough Around Hour Two
The scenery is the reason to take the train, and the scenery will not fill the trip. This surprises people every time. The first stretch out of the station earns the ticket, especially heading west, and then there is a long middle where the view is a fence line and some fields and it stays that way for a while.

The trick is to stop treating the window as the entertainment and start treating it as the backdrop. Anything you do on a train is better than doing the same thing at home, because the view is there in your peripheral vision the whole time. Reading on a train beats reading on a couch. The window does not have to carry the trip by itself, and it will do its best work if you stop staring at it waiting to be impressed.
Charge Everything, And Bring More Battery Than You Think
Outlet access on long distance trains ranges from one per seat pair to whatever you can find in the lounge car, and it is never quite as available as you assumed when you packed. This is the single most common way a long ride goes sideways, because every plan on this list runs on a device that is at eleven percent by mid afternoon.
Bring a power bank, and bring a bigger one than feels reasonable. A decent magnetic pack or a slim high capacity bank will carry a phone through a full day with room left over, and if you are traveling with somebody it doubles as the thing that keeps the peace when their phone dies first. A short cable is also worth packing, since the outlet is frequently in an awkward spot relative to where you are sitting.
Download Everything Before You Board
Connectivity on a long route drops out for long stretches, and it is bad in the most scenic places, because mountains and canyons and empty country are exactly where the towers are not. Assume you will lose signal for hours at a time and plan around it rather than being annoyed by it.
Download the podcasts, the playlist, the shows, and the books before you leave. Anything that streams will fail somewhere in Nebraska or the Rockies and it will fail at the worst moment. Games that run offline are worth sorting out in advance for the same reason, and it is worth actually testing one in airplane mode at home rather than discovering on board that it wanted a connection all along.
Headphones Are Not Optional
A train car is a shared room with strangers in it for a very long time, and the ambient noise is constant. Wheel noise, announcements, the door at the end of the car, somebody's speakerphone call. None of it is loud enough to complain about and all of it is loud enough to wear on you by hour eight.
A decent pair of noise canceling headphones changes the entire experience, and not only because of what you are listening to. Being able to switch the car off for an hour is what makes it possible to sit in one for two days without getting irritable. It is also the difference between sleeping and not sleeping, which matters more on an overnight leg than anything else you pack.
Use The Other Cars
The seat is not the trip. Long distance trains have an observation or lounge car with wraparound windows and seats that face out, and it is almost always less crowded than people expect. Going and sitting in it for an hour is an activity, and it resets the ride in a way that nothing you do at your own seat will.
The dining car is the same idea. On the long routes, meal service puts you at a table with other passengers, and the conversation is either great or it is a story either way. It costs you an hour you had nothing else to do with. Walking the length of the train and back is not nothing either, when you have been sitting since morning.
Sleeping On The Overnight Leg
If your route runs through the night in coach, the seats recline further than an airline seat and there is real legroom, but nobody is describing it as comfortable. An eye mask, the headphones, and something to brace your head against the window wall get you most of the way there.
The upgrade decision is worth doing honestly before you book rather than at midnight. A roomette costs real money and buys you a door, a bed, and usually meals. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether you can sleep sitting up, and you already know the answer to that about yourself.
The Trains Where Killing Time Is Not The Point
Worth separating out: some train trips are short enough and scenic enough that none of this applies, and you would be doing yourself a disservice by looking at a phone at all. The Royal Gorge Route in Colorado runs a couple dozen miles of canyon you cannot reach by car, which is a very different proposition from two days across the plains. Same with the scenic routes through the Rockies and the Canadian side of the border.
Know which one you booked. On a long haul, a plan for the hours is what makes the trip enjoyable instead of endless. On a short scenic run, the plan is to look out the window and leave the phone in your pocket, because that stretch is the entire reason anybody bought the ticket.
