# Ways To Still Explore Alaska Even Big Ship Cruising Isn't Happening This Year *By James Hills — Updated August 2022* At this point it unfortunately appears that cruising isn't going to happen this year, at least not for the big ship from Holland America Line, Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival. However, that isn't the end of the story. There are a surprising number of ways that you can still make Alaska your summer destination and maybe even make it better than other years when the ports and waterways are filled with cruise ship visitors. Luckily, there are small ship cruises like UnCruise Adventures, airline discounts from Alaskan Airlines, and some great lodges and rail tours to try. Or, you can just go and rent a Jeep and explore on your own! Here's why Alaska still makes a great choice to visit this year. One of the most intriguing reasons why Alaska might just be a perfect summer vacation this year is that it is likely to be one of the safest places for US visitors to explore. The state of Alaska has one of the highest rates of immunization and that means not only can you have less risk of getting sick, but you are also less likely to inadvertently spread COVID-19 to others.  Our partner site, [Cruise West Coast](https://cruisewestcoast.com) took a deeper look at this as well as [how you can explore Alaska this year](https://cruisewestcoast.com/how-you-can-still-visit-alaska-this-summer) even if the big ships aren't cruising.
