With Newcastle United currently flying high in the English Premier League, a trip to St James' Park to see the Magpies in action could be the order of the day. The atmosphere generated by the Toon Army is very unique and the great thing about St James' Park is that it’s pretty much in the city centre so you can enjoy a few pre-match and post-match beverages with the minimum of fuss. Newcastle Racecourse is a short taxi or bus ride away from the city centre and stages meetings right throughout the year, with the tickets very reasonably priced. From student bars to traditional pubs, Durham has something for everyone. A large proportion of the city’s student population also live quite close to the centre so Durham really comes to life at night and offers a decent alternative to Newcastle.
